Wakefield Little Theatre, is Wakefield’s oldest Drama
Group, established in 1948.
It evolved, after starting out as
Wakefield Youth Dramatic Society
in 1948, but it soon became apparent there wasn’t
an ‘open’ amateur dramatic group for local people.
So, a public meeting was held to test the waters
of support, and out of that was born The Chantry Players,
later changing its name to Wakefield Little Theatre.
The company performs between four and seven
plays a year, mainly at the Theatre Royal
and Opera House, but also The Lamproom Theatre
in Barnsley and in recent years, the group have
presented, Macbeth, Richard III and
Henry VI at Sandal Castle.
Wakefield Little Theatre Objectives are:
To stimulate and promote the education
of the public by the study of
Dramatic Art and for this purpose
to promote courses and study classes.
To promote the study and performance of plays
and other dramatic works, wether by ways of productions,
public or private performances, play readings,
dramatic festivals in Wakefield, or as otherwise
decided from time to time.
